Trevor Justice is a talented songwriter who uses his background in musical theatre to tell some wonderful tales. While his style is reminiscent of Broadway, it is also current and somewhat urban, pulling from R&B, soul and the singer-songwriter genres. Unlike many songwriters who only seem to be able to write about themselves, Trevor can step outside himself and write from the heart about people and places; he brings their stories to life for his audience. For example, his song “A New Life” tells the beautiful story of a man who chooses to support his wife as she brings a new life into the world rather than pursuing his dream career.

Trevor’s debut CD is a very polished work with strong production values, a very clean sound, and excellent musicianship. When performing solo, however, Trevor strips his songs down to their bare bones, distilling each song down to its essence. Without a lot of frills and embellishments, he lets the characters and their dramas speak for themselves, riding on the framework of his simple yet elegant keyboard style. His vocals are straightforward and unadorned as well, while still providing an attractive vehicle for his emotionally packed narratives.

Finally, as well as providing an enjoyable listening experience, his songs have a depth of meaning which suggests a spiritual inclination. He manages to avoid being preachy, however, and instead alludes to his beliefs rather than selling them retail. They resonate throughout his songs like an underground river, bursting forth in his soaring choruses. Combined with his musical foundations, they give him a potent one-two punch of artistry and depth of soul.
